Early rotary shaft seals were made of leather, then synthetic rubber, but current materials and designs feature a bonded seal with a single metal pressing and an outer layer of rubber that offers the optimal fluid-tight joint with the machine housing.
A hydrodynamic or positive action feature, which consists of raised ribs on the air side of the sealing lip are "bedded-in" to form tiny projections that catch any leaking oil and send it back to the oil film beneath the lip.
